12th Convocation Ceremony


Tronoh, 21st October – The Chancellor Hall was filled with excitement and the radiant smiles of graduating students and proud parents as the annual convocation ceremony is was held in sessions. A total of 1267 students graduated this year, 154 comprising of postgraduate students and 1113 of undergraduate students from various programmes; Chemical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Electrical & Electronics Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Petroleum Engineering, Business Information Systems and Information & Communication Technology.

Among those who graced the joyous occasion was Malaysia’s former prime minister, YABhg. Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad, Chancellor of UTP; YBhg. Tan Sri Dato’  Shamsul Azhar Abbas, Pro-Chancellor of UTP; and YBhg Datuk Dr. Zainal Abidin Hj Kasim, Vice Chancellor of UTP.

Minggu Mesra Kampus (MMK) Sept '12




Tronoh, 9th October- Always hoped for a chance to win hampers and a brand new Samsung Galaxy W? You might have just missed the chance to do so. These were some of the attractive prize offered by the organizer of Minggu Mesra Kampus (MMK), Students Representative Council (MPPUTP). For the first time ever, the event took place at Pocket C foyer and was held for three days. It was organized to attract students’ active involvement in clubs and  societies as well as to increase awareness amongst students about the happenings on campus. Moreover, the event was held there to promote Pocket C Student Centre to students especially those from the new intake.

Booths were set up by clubs and societies for introduction and recruitment purposes.   Among the organisation that participated were the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME), English Language Club (ELC), International Culture Club (ICC), The Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE), Institute of Engineers Malaysia (IEM), UTP Robotics Society (PETROBOTS) and many more. Apart from that, the student bodies of UTP comprising of Friends of IRC (FIRC), Sekretariat Rakan Muda (SRM), Residential College Support Unit (RCSU) and MPPUTP had booths to keep students updated on upcoming events.

A martial arts demonstration was performed by the Aikido Club, International Muaythai Club and Taekwondo Club in which excellent skills in self-protection were displayed by their members. In addition, activities such as lucky draw, games and paintball matches added excitement to the event. There was also a flash mob dance performance given by members of AIESEC in conjunction with its upcoming events that focuses on HIV/AIDS and exchange programs. Furthermore, there were vendors at the event promoting and selling their products such as clothes, food, drinks, and computer gadgets.

The project manager, Muhamad Azizi bin Amat Zainordin expressed his gratitude to the management of UTP, all presidents of clubs and societies, and parties who had directly or indirectly contributed to the success of MMK. He also expressed hope that the event could be held in a larger scale in  future.

SKI: Producing World Class Leaders


Tronoh, 6th October – “An amazing level of intellectuality is shown by the participants for being able to give alternative views and critical points.” said Muhammad Syaari Ab. Rahman, or better known as Ustaz Syaari after an 8 hour leadership seminar held in Hall 3, Pocket D.

Ustaz Syaari is the Managing Director of Ibrah Paradigm Training and Consultancy and also the author of the bestselling book titled “Kuasa Kepimpinan Al-Fateh” (The Power of Al-Fateh Leadership). He was invited by the organizing committees, University Teknologi PETRONAS An-Nur Islamic Centre, Global Ukhuwwah and Rakan Masjid, to speak for the Seminar  Kecemerlangan Islamika (SKI).

The main purpose of the seminar is to promote An-Nur Islamic Centre Gabung Ukhuwwah 2.0. The seminar mainly focuses on boosting one’s leadership, with the Islamic icon, Muhammad Al-Fateh (Muhammad the   Conqueror) as role model. The seven virtues emphasized in a leader are Being Positive, Proactive, have a Clear Vision, Teamwork (Synergy), Think Out of The Box, have Integrity, and Tawakkal (to wholeheartedly have faith in God’s fate after hard work).

Project Manager, Safaraz Ahmad bin Khaliq Maqsood (ICT, Final year, 2nd semester) said, “There has not been a seminar like this one,” he added, “that gives understanding on the qualities of Al-Fateh in UTP”. Ustaz Dawi Cahyano bin Nurdin, head of An-Nur Islamic Centre described Ustaz Syaari’s seminar as “bedah buku”, which literally means dissecting a book. Ustaz Syaari’s talk will deepen understanding the participants by explaining the contents of his studies on Al-Fateh.

Almural Abdelkreem Surges to Victory in UTP Run


Tronoh, 6th October – Almural Aldelkreem Saeed Rabih (PG postgraduate, 1st year 3rd sem) crossed the finishing line at Chancellor      Complex with only one thing on his mind and that is to win for his country, Sudan. The crowd applauded him as he became the first champion of UTP Run which was the inaugural official run held in UTP.

Elated with his victory, Almural Aldelkreem said, “I joined UTP run because I heard this competition is open to all, giving me a wider competition. I participate in a lot of events just to meet new and different people.”

Meanwhile, the women’s category champion title was swept by UTP-ian, Shakhnolza Khamdamova (PE, 1st
year) who had an unexpected win even though she had a 10 minutes delay. She commented that the race was a different experience as she never ran on a major road before. Shakhnolza had also represented UTP and won third place in UTAR’s run.

With the theme “Together We Run”, UTP Run was held in collaboration with MPPUTP, UTPRRT (UTP Road Runners Team ), and the Student Support Services Department. The winners each receive RM250 worth of cash, Figos Merchandise and a voucher for Domino’s Pizza.
