UTP DUATHLON CHALLENGE – 2015

Kayak House, 13th June – UTP Duathlon Challenge 2015 is a one-day event, organised by Kelab Kembara & Rekreasi (KEMBARA) UTP in collaboration with UTP Kayak Team. The project manager is Mohamed Hakam Husairi Bin Ismail. The main concept of this event is to establish a running and canoe event, also to integrate unity among the participants from various races and nationalities, through health fitness. This challenge is divided into two categories, land and water recreations. After warming up session, the flag-off was at 7:50AM. Twenty teams with two members registered ran for a distance about 6.5km starting from chancellor complex and followed by 1.5km of kayaking. With the arrival of Mr. Ahmad Pg Abdullah, Manager Co Q Unit UTP and Mr. Azrizal Hashri, Sport Executives Co-Q unit UTP, closing ceremony and prize giving were held.

Lumut, 12th -13th June 2015-Amazing Race UTP, the most challenging sports event organised by SRCUTP. This would be the second time this event is being executed. The Project Director named Mr.Thinesh Reddy (Mechanical Engineering, 3rd Year/1st Semester) shared his hardships in organising this event with the help of his committees. One of their main struggles was on finding sponsorship for the event. Amazing Race UTP objectively done to raise fund for charity homes. The organising team of Amazing Race UTP will be visiting and spending time with 3 charitable homes which includes Pusat Penjagaan Persatuan Kanak-Kanak Yatim Rumah Wawasan Perak,Persatuan Kebajikan kanak-Kanak Yatim Rumah VC Ipoh and Pusat Jagaan Pertubuhan Pengurusan Rumah Kebajikan Kanak-kanak Sanatana Ashramam with the funds they have raised from this event. This event has two rounds (10 teams are selected from the first round) with 10 checkpoints each. Basically Amazing Race UTP is similar to the real amazing race that we witness in media but Amazing Race UTP was modified to make it suitable for student participation.15 teams participated in total. Each team was given t-shirts with different colour to make it easier to identify the teams. Interesting and challenging activities awaits the teams at every checkpoint such as fear-factor checkpoint, eat up the ice cream (made of ketchup and other ingredients), car wash, banana boating, kayaking and many more.

The team with the fastest time record was announced as the winners.

Highlight of this entire activity is having their last checkpoint out of UTP which is at Teluk Batik; Lumut which brought this event to a whole new level. As we asked the participants on their experience in this event, “Tired but I am happy at this moment in my life,” said by Prasshanth (Mechanical Engineering, 3rd year/1st Semester). The credit for the event was given to sponsors, committees and the beloved participants for making this event a success.

UTP, 13th June - Over one hundred students woke up early on Saturday morning to cluster for a run organised by Institution of Engineering Malaysia, University Technology PETRONAS at Chancellor Hall. According to the project management of IEM 2015 named Fatthie Khairullah, this is the very first obstacle run to create a healthier environment among UTP students, strengthen the bond among students through sports and also to promote IEM. Apparently, this is not a normal 6KM run, it consists of four obstacles; water balloons, tire jumps, chairs escape, caution tapes. IEM has invited Fit to Fat trainers Milton and Themba to structure the warming up and first Aid. "I really enjoyed the run. The obstacles were easy and weren’t consuming the time,” said by Tang Yin Mui, winner with record 39.04 minutes. The prizes were fascinating as told by Nabila from IEM. There were different prizes for both males and females. The champions won RM150, 1st runner-up grabbed RM100, RM50 for 2nd runner-up and 4th to 20th earned medals whereas certificates to all participants. This event was ended with a group picture of all the participants.

Chancellor Hall, 7th June – Festival of Colours of the World (FESCO) 2015, was held to exhibit students’ talent and skills and to appreciate various cultures in Malaysia. The event was honoured with the presence of  YB Mr Rodzuan Ismail, Director of Policy Planning and Research Department of Arts and Culture, Tn. Hj. Mohamed Noor Rosli bin  Baharom, Deputy Vice Chancellor, Student Affairs and Alumni, Encik Nordin Bin Abdolatip, Advisor of FESCO 2015 as well as UTP staffs and students. Performances from students were the main attraction of the event and the UTP’s fame Gajjdi Jawani, Gamelan Group Sanggar Kirana and the Mozambique Dance Group added more colours into it. Datin Noor Hasliah Abu Hasan also known as Alyah, a beautiful female pop star who rose to fame with her single ‘Tak Mungkin Kerana Sayang’ was invited as the special guest for FESCO 2015. She sang her recent hit songs that made all the spectators to be mesmerized with her melodious voice.  The next agenda was the award giving ceremony. The Best Malay Traditional Dance title was won by the Waris group from Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris and The Best ‘New Dance Creations Based on Folk Songs’ title was grabbed by the Bayu group from Universiti Malaysia Sarawak also winning the Best Choreography title. Adding onto that, the ‘Best New Dance Creations: Primary School Category’ title was secured by SK Permas Jaya 1 also winning the Best Choreography title. FESCO 2015 was a huge success with a great teamwork from all the members.

 Chancellor Hall, 13th June – UTP’s Chancellor Hall came to life with the blast of foot- tapping music and eye-catching decorations during Red Sonata Fiesta 2015 (RSF). The long-awaited event began with the arrival of Tuan Haji Mohamed Noor Rosli bin Baharom, Deputy Vice Chancellor of Student Affairs and Alumni ushered by lion dance which the audiences then applaud as they walked to their seats. RSF is an annual event organised by UTP’s Chinese Orchestra in collaboration with Kedah Chinese Assembly Hall to promote Chinese culture in conjunction with the 1 Malaysia concept to the varsity community and the public through various kinds of cultural activities. Most surprisingly  the Chancellor Hall which could accommodate approximately 2500 people was fully packed that day.
            During the event, the audience witnessed various performances ranging from singing, dancing to playing instruments. The first performance guest was Wendy Woo, a 22-year-old who grew up in Perak, Malaysia. The songs that she sang wereXi Huan Niand ‘Luo Ye Gui Gen’.She was once recruited as one of the apprentice of ‘The Voice of China’ and she won many titles in singing competitions. The next performance guest was Professor Cui Jun Zhi, she often considered to be the leading exponent of the Kong Hou, a harp like instrument that died off during the Ming dynasty. Her performance had impressed all the audience because Kong Hou is a very rare Chinese musical instrument.
          The event was also participated by teachers and students from all over the states, ranging from primary school students to university students to compete in the Chinese Orchestra Competition, Band Orchestra Competition, Choir Competition and Dance Competition which held on the 12th and 13th of June. The winners from each category were given an opportunity to show their talent on the stage after the award giving ceremony. The event came to an end at 12.00am where happiness can be seen on the faces of the audience.

Chancellor Complex, 9 & 10 June 2015 – Technology Education Career 2015 (TEC) is said to be the biggest annual event held by TEC Secretariat team with the support of Careeer Advisory and this year, TEC 2015 was back again for the 15th time in Universiti Teknologi Petronas. This event was officiated by Mr.Maen Razouqi, Vice Preseident and General Manager of Schlumberger BMP. According to the Project Manager, Mr Muhammad Haziq bin Abdul Gani, it was firstly established in the year of 2001 and now it has becoming more and more recognized among the university students from all over Malaysia, corporate companies and also to the public. TEC is held to equip graduates with skills for local and global job market. Besides being a medium of interaction between the graduates and the employers from various sectors, TEC also provides a platform for future leaders to gain experience of being interviewed and to be exposed to proper procedures of job application and internships.Over 70 companies participated in this year’s TEC with the crowds up to 6000 people who came to visit the booths that have been set up by the companies. Other events that were also organized during TEC days were the Mega Build Challenge, explore race for students, internship and job interviews, career talks and also a round table engagement with all the companies present on the day.

 Seminar Room, 2nd June 2015 - Health, Safety and Environment (HSE) Week UTP 2015 is an annual event that instil the importance of health, safety and environment (HSE) among the students of Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS (UTP). This year the event is organised by the HSE Department of UTP and co-presented by the Residential College Support Unit (RCSU) of UTP. The HSE Week was inaugurated by the renowned Malaysian astronaut Dato’ Dr. Sheikh Muszaphar Shukor who shared his experience throughout his journey to the International Space Station (ISS) and the health and safety measures that has been undergone to ensure the safe travel to the space and earth. This inauguration ceremony gave the students an opportunity to meet him and know more about the space exploration as well as the importance of applying HSE in different aspects of life especially in occupation to prevent occupational hazards. Moreover, this event also gave the chance to students to develop their knowledge in HSE because of the exhibition which has been conducted by the HSE organizations in Malaysia. For example, Rentokil, Malaysian Institute of Road Safety Research, Department of Occupational Health and Safety of Perak and UTP Security Service. The future events like HSE Disaster Modelling competition, Futsal Tournament, triathlon, HSE UTP Roadshow and many more will be conducted soon.

Seminar Room 6, 7, 8, 3rd June 2015- “Leaders become great, not because of their power, but because of their ability to empower others” quoted by John Maxwell about the leaders. Leaders are reckoned highly in the society. Student Representative Council Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS (SRCUTP) is a student council body that represents UTP students. The leaders are selected through election which was held on 3rd of June. On 1st June, the seven nominated candidates presented their manifestos’. The students started voting for their chosen candidate at Seminar Room from 9am until 5pm. The results were announced at 6pm.The results are stated in the table below:

Main Hall, 30th May 2015 - The Grand Gala Dinner 2015, an event organised by the American Association of Petroleum Geologists of Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS Student Chapter (AAPG-UTP-SC) to promote AAPG-UTP-SC to students who pursue their studies in the field of Petroleum Geoscience (PGs). This dinner also act as a kickoff to promote Geoscience Exhibition and Competition (GEnC) and Calorie Run, two main events organised by AAPG besides giving recognition to the top achievers (Dean’s List) of Petroleum Geoscience students. The winners of Mini Oil Rig Competition, Phillip Goh, Sheba, Sarah Lim and the Murphy Geoquiz Competition, Lee Ming Xiang, Kew Jiang Sheng and Chaim Cheah Jun were also awarded for grabbing second place in both competitions. Moving on to the performances, the audience witnessed spectacular performances by the Caklempong group, Myanmar dance group and UTP official band – Virtuoso. Congratulations to all Dean’s list students for their great achievement and students for winning the competitions. Hope that this dinner will be a motivation for them to keep up their good results till they graduate.
